About MDeyes

  • Antioxidants can assist in protecting the structures of the eye from free radical and oxidative damage

  • May help support the protective macular pigment of the retina

  • Features precise ingredients used in clinical trials

A clinical research in 2001, the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)*, examined the role of nutritional supplementation in eye health, reporting positive results for the daily supplementation of a specific combination of antioxidants, carotenoids and minerals.

* Age-Related Eye Disease Study Research Group. A randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial of high dose supplementation with vitamins C and E, beta carotene, and zinc for age-related macular degeneration and vision loss: AREDS report no. 8. Arch Ophthalmol. 2001;119(10):1417-1436.

In 2013, an important follow up, the Age Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2)** was published. Four major variables were considered: adding Lutein and Zeaxanthin; adding omega-3 fatty acids; removing beta-carotene; or reducing Zinc; as well as combinations of these variables.
**Lutein + zeaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids for age-related macular degeneration: the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) randomized clinical trial. JAMA. 2013 Jul 10;310(2):208.

Based on AREDS and AREDS2 research, MDeyes delivers a complete macular health formula in a simple ONCE DAILY dosage.

Updated clinical findings suggested that:

  • Replacing beta-carotene with 10mg of Lutein and 2mg of Zeaxanthin is appropriate and could improve the results

  • Adding omega-3 fatty acids had no beneficial effects

  • Reducing Zinc to a daily dose of 25mg had no difference in effectiveness to the high dose zinc used in the original study

The MDeyes formulation is based on these findings:

  • MDeyes delivers the precise ingredients and total daily amounts (25 mg Zinc formula) in a convenient ONCE DAILY formula

  • MDeyes includes specific ingredients featured in clinical research

Antioxidants and Macula Health
Everybody produces free radicals every day – they are generated within the body through a variety of mechanisms. Antioxidants act as ‘free radical scavengers’, and many free radicals are taken care of by the body’s own free radical antioxidant defences. However, there are some free radicals that elude these defences, resulting in cellular damage. Research suggests that free radical cellular damage can accumulate over time. Antioxidants such as Zinc and Vitamins C and E may help to defend against free radical damage in the structures of the eye.

Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Macula Health
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids naturally found in the human eye, with the highest concentration found in the macular area of the retina. In the macula, Lutein and Zeaxanthin naturally form a layer called the macular pigments, which serve as an effective natural filter of the most damaging UV light. Supplements containing natural Lutein and Zeaxanthin esters have been shown in trials to increase the density of the macular pigments. Higher macular pigment density is associated with healthier eyes, protection of retinal tissues, and supporting visual sensitivity.
